Wins at Speech and Debate Tournament

STUDENTS WIN AT STATEWIDE SPEECH AND DEBATE TOURNAMENT

Four students from the Butte College Communication Studies (CMST) 6 Oral Interpretation of Literature class brought home awards at the Northern California Forensics Association Spring Fling tournament held in Fremont, recently. The students, and their respective awards, are as follows:

Alora Fox: 1st Place, Poetry and 1st Place Prose Interpretation

Joe Wheeler and Kiersten Gama: 1st Place, Duo Interpretation

Joe Wheeler: 2nd Place, Dramatic Interpretation

Maria Venegas: 4th Place, Prose Interpretation

The Spring Fling Tournament featured competitions in 12 different events, and approximately 100 competitors from Northern California schools such as Chico State University, San Francisco State University, University of the Pacific, and community colleges.

“This event offers students an opportunity to directly apply the course material and share their social stances on major issues like mental illness, sexism, treatment of immigrants, as well as social and political inequality.  All of their pieces made strong statements and this tournament gave them a platform to share these perspectives with a larger audience,” said Shannan Troxel-Andreas,  Communication Studies instructor. “Traveling with Butte's competitive Forensics Team gave students a chance to see what they could go on to do in this specific field or in communication studies in general. Forensics is a large community that provides endless opportunities in speech and debate.  This is how some of the greatest speakers get their start and hone their skills.”
