The Butte College Speech and Debate Team closed out their season with a winning weekend at Hartnell College in Salinas recently.
The team competed in their last tournament of the semester where they earned nine awards and recognitions including second overall in the 2-year category and eight individual awards. They were joined at the tournament by four students from the oral interpretation class (CMST 6) who competed in prose and poetry.
Individual award:
First place in Poetry: Jazmin Cauffield
Second place in Impromptu: Elijah Ferguson
Second place in Extemporaneous: Elijah Ferguson
Second place in Communication Analysis: Mason Chavez
Fourth place in Persuasive: Elijah Ferguson
Finalist in Prose: Felipe Garcia, Courtney Siminton and George McGillivary
These wins follow the team’s fantastic showing at last month’s tournament at Diablo Valley College where they placed third overall in the 2-year category and received 13 individual awards.
