Butte College Professional Development Opportunities

The Professional Development efforts at Butte College help the college fulfill its mission, values, and commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Anti Racism and Accessibility (DEIA2) by providing its employees with a variety of workshops and training programs for professional growth.

BCLDI was created in 2005 as a way to offer a leadership curriculum for staff, faculty and administrators that is both comprehensive and rigorous, and provides and fosters a strong network of support and cooperation amongst the participants.

CACP is a year-long professional development program at Butte College designed to assist faculty and staff in better understanding and fully meeting the needs of culturally diverse students and colleagues. The seven once-a-month sessions focus on:

  • Exploring critical concepts related to race, gender, sexuality, ability, and class
  • Providing practical strategies for supporting students and colleagues at the intersections of marginalized identities.

Registration happens in late spring for this seven-workshop, year-long commitment.

The FAIR Classrooms Program provides a unique opportunity for faculty to:

  • Access data about how different groups of students are performing in your specific courses
  • Develop and use inquiry processes to improve student engagement and completion
  • Learn equity-minded classroom practices used by other educational leaders
  • Build a community of support with like-minded faculty

Year Long Program

The Butte College Great Teachers Seminar, offered every August before the fall semester begins, is both inspiring and rejuvenating. It brings together teachers from all disciplines, counselors, librarians and other faculty, both full-time and part-time, to explore successes and innovations and solutions to problems.
The Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) offer a practical approach to the improvement of the teaching and learning process. The ISW is an intensive four-day workshop conducted by community college educators for community college educators.

Workshop participants will explore concepts such as (1) participatory learning, (2) diversity of learning, (3) responsive and inclusive teaching, and (4) building a classroom community in which students of all backgrounds can thrive. Participating faculty will also determine how these concepts can be implemented in their classrooms.

For more information, please contact instructor Thomas Cox at coxth@big5vn.com.
This program explores bias and how it impacts our decision-making and shares specific strategies for mitigating bias in the recruitment and selection of faculty and staff.
The mission of the Safe Zone training program is to challenge homophobia, transmisogyny, cis-and heterosexism on the college campus and community by encouraging welcoming and inclusive environments for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer or Questioning, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) students, faculty, staff, and community members. The Safe Zone program is a 3 hour introductory training that invites participants to learn about LGBTQIA+ issues, provide resources, and create a supportive environment for LGBTQIA+ students, faculty, and staff exploring issues of sexual identity, gender identity, and gender expression.
This workshop assists staff, students and faculty in understanding laws governing the legal and educational rights of undocumented, AB 540, DACAmented, and Dreamer students and provides a variety of ways that we can serve as allies to these students.

BC Helping Academy

The BC Helping Academy is an intensive full-week seminar aimed at bringing together faculty and staff to develop a shared understanding of mental health awareness from an DEIA2 Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Anti-racism, and Accessibility lens to support all members of our campus.
